Frequently Asked Questions
Study session after school hours
Mr. Beal offers Morning Tutoring Sessions from 8:00 to 8:20 every day. After School Tutoring Sessions are available between 3:35 to 4:15 every day after school except for times where meetings are scheduled. Mr. Beal's availability is posted within his classroom and updated weekly.
How much notice do you need for a student to stay after school for extra help?
After School Sessions require little notice, informing Mr. Beal during the day's class period would suffice. If a student desires to take advantage of Morning Tutoring Sessions, Mr. Beal requests that he is informed at least a day prior.
If a student performs poorly on an assessment, do they have the opportunity to improve their grade?
Yes! Students have the opportunity to improve their grade on any assessment that is given a percent score. The student must meet with Mr. Beal before or after school within two weeks of receiving the graded assessment. Every incorrect response must be corrected and as a result half of the deducted score is returned onto the assessment. Mr. Beal encourages every student, regardless of their score, to make corrections on assessments, as it is a great opportunity to improve their understanding!
Does a student need to be enrolled in a IB program (DP or CP) in order to enroll in the IB Physics SL course?
No! Students do not have to be enrolled in the IB DP/CP program in order to enroll in the IB Physics SL course. The IB Physics course covers the material that would be addressed in a Honors Physics course, yet approaches the concepts and material in a different manner.
I noticed that the IB Physics content is taught over two years, is a student required to enroll in both years for the course.
The IB Physics SL course does span over two years. It is not required to take both years of the course, unless you are enrolled in the DP or CP program. I would highly recommend that ALL students that enroll for the first year of the course, continue on with the second year, as many of the exciting and unique topics are covered within the second year. Every student who enrolls in the second year of IB Physics SL will be required to complete an Internal and External Assessment.
Within the IB Physics course, what are the Internal and External Assessments?
The Internal Assessment is an individually created and conducted laboratory experiment accompanied by a lab report write-up. The External Assessment is set of three summative exams that assess student knowledge of material covered in the two years of the course.
